...About That Tablecloth

Leave it two exceptional artists, Theresa and Gina, to zero in and ask specifics about my lavender tablecloth.

I coveted this tablecloth for a year in a neighborhood antique mall, always surprised on my weekly visit to find that it hadn't been sold. Eventually it was marked down...and then again...until finally, one day, I saw that the occupants were moving and everything must go at 50% off the already marked down price. It was mine.

It is the most sumptuous fabric, soft as silk or pashmina, with a design woven in gold threads of a procession of turbaned men riding elegant horses surrounded by long feathered birds, flowering branches, and palm trees. One man holds a falcon. A large paisley is used as the design for a sunshade. They are followed by three women walking behind. The first woman appears to be older than the other two and is leading the woman in the center by a chain or rope gathered and forming two rings. They are heading towards an elaborate oriental structure where people are gathered above and a dancer is dancing in front. The opposite side is the exact reverse with the gold threads as background. There are six napkins, also with gold reverse.

My guess is that it's a wedding scene and was probably a gift to a bride. Indian, Chinese, or French made? I don't know as there are no tags.

Thanks for asking. What do you think?

I highly recommend the blogs of Theresa and Gina for the beauty and expertise they share each week:

I think it's absolutely gorgeous and I am very jealous! I would be tempted to wear it as an evening wrap.

What a beautiful find! If it were framed, it would look like a painting.

Dear Catherine, This is indeed the most beautiful tablecloth. The color combination is so unusual and the design is extraordinary. What a treasure you have. Thanks so much for taking the trouble.

Dash - That's what the fabric feels like...a soft and cozy wrap.

Carla - I've thought of framing it before!

Gina - It was my pleasure.

thank you for elaborating on this wonderful tablecloth! I think it is a high end textile with such a detailed story woven into the design. I still would love to know the source(maker) and see if they are still in existence! The backside is just a beautiful as the front.
